One Room Challenge: Week 2

office nook

Welcome back to the One Room Challenge. This is week 2 { see week 1 if you missed it }. I'm making over a small loft office space in a chic downtown space. I'm all about the black and white look so today I am sharing a bit of the plans for the decorating thats about to go down. Ordering items always takes time so getting a plan together before you actually decorate is always best. In terms of the layout here is what I am thinking...

layout for office

I love the idea of a computer workstation and art wall. The art I've chosen is a mix of her feminine and boho glamour. I found the chic artwork on minted. I am choosing all black frames for the black and white art so as to not compete but complement the computer screen so it all looks like one big, beautiful gallery wall.

sources for artwork [ bull horns | feathers | nude sketch ]

I also am pretty much obsessed with the Jonathan Adler sconce that I found on lamps plus. We are going to throw in some chic white Eames chairs with wood on the base to break up the harshness in the space. I am all about adding natural elements here.  I also love this black and white chevron basket to put her drafts and photography poles in.  I want to keep her workspace clutter free and super clean so on the opposite side of the desk, we will put the large white bookcase filled with all that she needs.

office items

I find that adding some vintage finds she already has in her home will really be what makes a more loft + modern space, warm. Next, I'll add some greenery to the room, which will give amazing life and energy to the space. I also love how green looks against black and white. I found this plush moroccan rug at wayfair for a GREAT price. It pulls together all the black items and adds a textural element to the room since we are opting for no curtains. The open windows in her loft space are so pretty.

That's it for now, will fill you in on more next week. Don't forget to check out my other fab decoristas and their ORC's:

10 things that rocked my world this week. Chicago.

buckinghamid

1. I had the best start to the week in Chicago last week. I hadn't been in forever and it was such a wonderful time. Along with a few design meetings, I had to stop in to some stores I had been dying to visit. One, Buckingham ID. This store was so pretty and colorful I loved everything about it.

painted lady

2. The painted lady. Such a beautiful store, very French, very soft and romantic. I just loved the ambiance and vibe. I also found some chic clothes here too.

jayson home and garden

3. Jayson Home & Garden. This store was incredible. I loved how dark and dreamy everything looked. It's a very masculine vibe but not too much, there was just the right amount of feminine flair that I was absolutely in love! I'm especially into feathers right now, so these art prints really called my name.

python desk

4. I also fell madly in love with this python desk. Hard to see in this photo, but oh my goodness it was such a stunner. I really really really want one!

adore home

5. Meanwhile, back in Texas...I was so excited and proud to have my Austin home featured in the current issue of Adore Home Magazine. Was beyond an honor.

[show_shopthepost_widget id="307372"]art x ashlina

6. My most recent update is my new art piece I created and put up in the space where the mirror was. Art x Ashlina coming soon!

pottery barn

7. I also felt something was missing in my space. Then I realized, hello! Black and white stripes are pretty much a signature print for me. So I headed over to Pottery Barn to grab these gorgeous pillow cases.

domino mag

8. Also, so many of you have asked about my skulls in my home and where I got them. This crystal skull is from Zgallerie. I'm obsessed.

tye die rug

9. Not only am I obsessed with tie dye flowy dresses, I am now obsessed with tie dye rugs. Genius.

turquoise boots

10. I am also very much now into anything with fringe. This weekend was Austin City Limits and the fashion around town was amazing. Tons of fringe happening and I fell hard for these fab boots.

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: Week 1

one room challenge - before

It's that time again. The One Room Challenge season is upon us and I am ready to decorate. [For those of you who don't know ORC is a 6 week long series on the blog of redecorating a room, I will fill you in on the process along with 20 other fab designers, too]. Life has been pretty hectic for me and I feel like I have been ALL over the place. Having said that, I had planned a clients guest room for the ORC, and then a flood happened and ruined the space. So, I'll be helping my fab assistant redecorate her loft office nook. She was using it for a closet, but she is a graphic designer and photographer and she really needs a space to inspire her to create. Office spaces are MY fave, so this will be so much fun. Also, so much fun for us to work on together.

photo 2-9

Details of the space: The layout is pretty small, and 2 of the walls are cinderblock. She has has a desk, and a black console that she keeps her storage in. So finding ways around these modern items will be fun and of course I want to add a little bit of glamour to her minimalistic vibe.

Items we are going to use:

Screen Shot 2014-10-02 at 11.29.19 PM

This bookshelf. She currently uses it as a headboard, but I think it would totally work in the office space. I am also a firm believer in moving around furniture to give your space a fresh feel. Also, below is her drafting table and stool, which she uses everyday and she needs.

Screen Shot 2014-10-02 at 11.31.28 PM

I've got my brain racked with chic loft office looks I want to include. Here are some vibes I'm really into...

art ideas

As much as I love wood floors, if I could paint everything glossy white I so would. I do love the vibe of the black and white art in this space. Definitely thinking we could add some black frames to some fun art she has collected and possibly find some new.

black office

I love the black fur on the white chair and all the white furniture.

black bits

I love the idea of some modern chairs and I also love the idea of some swing arm sconces for her wall. That could be so modern and cool. Stacks of mags always are a stylish addition.

romance additions

It wouldn't be like me to have only very stark decor, so I want to add some more romantic pieces and layered elements to the space. You know, candles, pillows, fur, horns, antiques.

Items I am considering:

I am so excited to get all of this going. Stay tuned for next weeks installment of the One Room Challenge and don't forget to visit all the other gals who are making over rooms too!

My home feature in Adore Home Magazine

ashlina takes austin

Hey everyone. If you have noticed I haven't posted in a few days, I must apologize. My site was down again due to server issues. The internet kills me sometimes. BUT...I'm back with some very exciting news. The latest issue of Adore Home Magazine has come out and they featured my adorable Austin abode. So exciting! I love the new issue, especially the emphasis on bar cart styling. I keep my bar on my entryway console (see the photo above.)

I looooooooove my apartment in Austin so much. It's such a mix of my personality. Here are a few peek shots from the magazine. All photos shot by the talented Austin photog Erin Williamson of Design Crisis. She did such a good job capturing the magic of the space.

antiquing mirrors

5. Did a little antiquing at Uncommon Objects on South Congress. I wanted everything in that place, especially these round gold mirrors.

veuve clicquot

6. Austin City Limits is around the corner and the fun has already begun. Keep your eyes out for the Veuve Clicquot mail truck dropping champagne of all over town.

florals and leather

7. This is my killer combo right now. Black leather and florals.

greens

8. I am a huge believer in plant life at home. Plants bring life to a home. Period. In love with my fiddle leaf.

all gray bedroom

9. All grey. All day. This is such a killer look. Well done Kelly Wearstler.

your own voice

10.  This is quote of the week. Listen to your own voice, not the sound of others. Took me a long time to learn this but I'm getting it down.

my current mood: wonderful white.

carolina-engman-home21

I have a small obsession with Carolina Engman's all white and perfectly modern apartment. There is something so very fresh and fun about it. Although we are leaving summer and not supposed to wear white after Labor Day, I still love all white in the home. I'm inspired by her collection of pillows too. The palm leaf print steals my heart any day. This look is incredibly easy to achieve and totally budget friendly.

There is nothing like the modern white look to me. It's so fresh and fab and keeps things so clean looking. On another note, I also love the look in a more vintage setting. This way I prefer gold accents as opposed to silver, its just a bit more rich and lovely. It also looks better when the photos are so soft and romantic. This look isn't as easy to just whip together. There has got to be collected items that have been pulled together seamlessly.

fall decor essentials: fur & fringe

fur

Layering up for fall is what everyone talks about fashion wise. Well, what about home wise? You've got to always add your home into the 'stylish life' equation. I am all about adding and subtracting pieces as the seasons change. One thing I love to do is add textures. I think throwing fur {faux fur of course} all over the place is a definite essential for fall. I've never seen black and white fur before and I love this little office nook from afabchallenge.

fur chair

Another thing I have noticed buzzing around are these chic little fringe things. Fringe is definitely in fashion, so these babies are right on trend.

I really like these little fringe things. You can find them all over etsy. I like this one.

Interior Inspirations: by photographer Angus Fergusson

black entryway magic

I am completely head over heels in love with the work of photographer Angus Fergusson. His photos bring out the beauty of an interior space and show the power of color and vignettes. I am very much a fan of black, but at times I get apprehensive about layering it like in this chic vignette space. After seeing the magic in this picture I now believe that black layers equal complete sophistication.

Screen Shot 2014-09-24 at 11.10.02 AM

On the opposite spectrum, I also see how beautifully non matching colors can go together. I think Miles Redd was once quoted saying "all colors go together", despite the color rules we all think we know. This photo is unexpected but perfectly peaceful.

Angus captures interiors so beautifully, no? It makes every finish and detail pop. I even think after these photos, I am now a fan of this exposed wood look. See more of his fantastic work at AngusFergusson.com

organized beauty...

beauty area

I think this week is going to be organization week here on The Decorista. Yesterday I expressed the importance of an organized office. It is absolutely crucial for a happy home. This morning I came to the realization that next to the office, my vanity is everything to me. It's so important to have a clean and organized area where you get ready in the morning. I found this vanity and fell instantly in love. I love the glass cases on the wall to store beauty products. It's such a chic look. I also am obsessed with the way mirrored trays keep things looking clean and organized.

flowers

diptyque

If I have learned anything about beauty, I have learned the importance of cleaning your makeup brushes. It affects the face and can get bacteria, so it is so essential to keep everything clean. I think its such a chic idea to store make up brushes in Diptyque empty candle glasses. When you have a few its a sweet uniformed look. I also love vintage glasses and vases for the same thing.

Love this sweet article found on Vogue about beauty. Such great beauty inspiration. Now go out there and beautify your vanity. It will make getting ready so much more fun.

an organized office...

office space

Oh Monday came way too fast for me. Hello, here we are and its a day full of work, work and more work. Then I came across this pretty little space on A Beautiful Mess and thought how pleasant it would be to work here.  Yes. The lovely wallpaper, all of the black and white bits. If my office was this clean, I don't even know how much more I could accomplish...how much more efficient I would be in the day. An organized office really is EVERYTHIHNG.  Thinking I'm going to get around to tidying up my workspace today. Thank you pretty little workspace! Oh, and this one too.

office glamour

Now this workspace I am ALL into. Spotted it on Refinery 29 and its just up my alley. Love the zebra chair.

killer color combo: black. grey. white. wood.

I've been on the hunt for a studio space here in Austin. Things are getting very busy and I need a bigger space to work in. I've just outgrown things around here. I also think I am itching a bit to decorate a new space for myself. In just a short few months of being in Austin, my style has drastically evolved. It's a lot of fun to change, play and explore different styles. Austin has a lot of very modern spaces, which I usually am not really into but recently I am loving the vibe of loft life. One studio I found has a gray cinderblock wall which I sort of loved. Then of course my brain got to imagining the styled space and blacks, greys, exposed woods and whites started dancing through my head...

with a french twist

I love the way the modern color palate mixes with wood to create a warmer, cozier vibe. While its a more masculine combo, I think you can still make it feel feminine and pretty. Just a more sophisticated pretty.

black and naturel grey loft grey walls modern wood block

Of course you can't forget how important the details are. I love exposed lightbulbs, wood accents, clear antique glass items, and of course vintage art. Portraits are so in right now so I've been on the hunt for those when I'm antiquing.

Currently Obsessed: Anthropologie hardware

HANDLES AGATE

The other day I was hanging with a girlfriend and we were chatting about furniture design, etc. It was brought to my attention that Anthro stepped their game up when it comes to hardware and sure enough, they have! I'm pretty much obsessed with everything  new they are doing. Lots of metallics and angles. Here are my favorites...

hardware anthro

1. Prism handles. I'm obsessed with the shape of these.

2. Agate hardware. These are always so glam.

3. Gramercy knobs.  I absolutely love the contrast metals.

4. Geometric brass knob. This one is so current. I love it.

5. Saddle stitch handle. I love the elegance of leather.

6. Bee honeycomb handle. These are so charming, to add to any kids space.

Fall bedroom makeover with Target

target bedroom makeover

With fall fast approaching, I wanted a little something different for my bedroom. It's pretty with lilac and gold but I wanted something more rich, more modern for the colder months. Of course black was so necessary. So, when Target approached me with a bedroom makeover I knew I had to take part! With under $150 in my pocket to use, I created a modern black and gold vibe to my previously romantic room. Now I am in love!

Here's what I felt that the room needed.

1- I changed out my white lampshades for these black lampshades. It made the vintage crystal lamp look so much richer.

2- I swapped out my antique french mirror for these fab gold sea urchins , they are a bit more modern in feel.

3- Nate Berkus has really been killing it with his Target collections. I felt that this Geometric gold vase would edge up the femininity of my room a bit.

4- Absolutely obsessed with the black and white Nate Berkus pillow look, I had to have them. They are a tad small for my liking but add a little warmth & style.

5- I have a thing for wings and feathers, so of course adding this gold angel wing dish for my jewels at night.

Paris apartment tour...whimsy & color

BLUE VELVET SOFA

It's been taking me a minute to get adjusted back to the week. After having guests all weekend, I need a good time to recoup, reflect, prepare, etc. Monday was a slow start for me but today I'm finally getting back around to feeling sane again due in large part to coffee. What I love about the home, is that if decorated well, it can completely support you in life. I love my little condo and just looking around at beautiful things that are aesthetically pleasing and complement each other, it just makes me feel so good. I'm a huge believer in that. While black, white and gold are my happy place, I am certainly made happy by the colors of the ocean too and that was made obvious to me when I saw this room and the gorgeous blue sofa...

So, when I found this home, even if just perusing online, it did the same thing for me...happiness McGee. I love the grey wood flooring and the grey walls. That shade of grey is fantastic. It makes the blues and greens pop so beautifully. Not to mention the mix of brass and natural accents. That's when I decided that sharing this home was so necessary. A few things to note here, a painted ceiling. I really enjoy when an entire room is painted and not just 'ceiling left white' situation. The palm wallpaper in the breakfast nook. I've never really seen this pattern before, therefore I adore it!

BLACK AND GOLD

The darkness of the walls and the light wood flooring is such a winning combo. This Parisian apartment just killed it for me. Colorful, yet still whimsical and modern with metallic accents. Yes.

Austin Style: LaV restaurant

I swear not a day goes by the Austin doesn't get cooler and cooler. I am falling more in love with this town every single day. Last night I met up with a girlfriend for dinner to talk some business, she wanted to show me her favorite spot that she knew I would love. Not only because of the food and wine but because of how chic the decor is. She was absolutely right. LaV, a French restaurant & wine bar, has knocked it out of the park with the ambiance.

LaV_austin_banquette

How gorgeous is this banquet? I've always been a sucker for tufted so naturally I love this cozy little corner. I'm not much for French food but I will tell you, everything I tasted was just so delicious. I even enjoyed the octopus, so not normal for me. The night was so enjoyable because the ambiance was so elegant but not overly stuffy, it really was like that fabulous dinner party at someone very chic's home. Loved. it. all.

Entreprenueress 101: How to attract the clients you WANT!

Many of you readers are so dear to my heart because you are budding little decoristas, designers, creatives, etc. I love your emails asking me for advice and any words of wisdom. I get so excited to just share everything I know and I enjoy coaching you girls so much! Today, I have a super fun topic to talk about...How to actually target the ideal client base that you dream of. My girl Dayka, an Atlanta designer, laid it out for us perfectly and today is sharing a few tips with us that I could not have said better myself...

target ideal clients

If you're feeling creatively stuck as a designer (or ANY creative artist), one of the first things you should assess is whether you're really working with your targeted crowd...because nothing will suck the life out of you like an "un-ideal" client (that sounds much nicer than calling them "bad", right?). An ideal client is to a creative like a weave is to Beyonce...you can still have a business without it, but it doesn't quite have the same spirit. (Get my drift?)

Attracting your ideal client won't ensure your business will be a raving success, but constantly working with "your people" is one of the best ways to position yourself FOR success.

HERE'S WHY (AND HOW) TO ATTRACT THE CLIENTS YOU WANT

1. Figure out who they are. I mean really sit down and figure it out. People always crack up at me because I can easily run off the demographics of my current client base (income, ethnicity, family size, education, location, age, marital status)--one thing you can be assured of, I know who my people are, and I know who I want to work with. Simply saying that you want to work with "people with money" might be the obvious choice but it isn't enough, plus...it cheapens you as a creative. Do you REALLY want to work with just anyone who throws a stack of money in your lap? I know I don't. I like clients with great energy & an appreciation of great style (fashion, makeup, hair, architecture, Interior Design, etc) who like to like to push past their boundaries and are confident in their selection of me as their designer not because I'm the cheapest, but because they want to work with me specifically. I like clients who want to take chances but hire me because they love my aesthetic and are not quite sure HOW to make the right choices in their decor. Simply having a big wallet just isn't enough. As a creative, there are certain jobs you shouldn't take on and in order to be clear about which jobs to turn down, you have to identify your tribe.
2. Know who YOU are. Wait a minute--are YOU even clear about what you're doing (or what service you're providing)?? If not, this is square one. Make sure you're clear about who you are as a brand & business owner and can clearly communicate your "who-ness" to others verbally(or if you wanna get all business lingo technical, it's known as your USP--unique selling proposition). If you're not sure about what & who you are, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize your people aren't going to be sure either. And if they're not sure, they won't hire you.
3. Create your highest standard (like attracts like). Look for opportunities to do the work you want to be doing now--no matter where you are in your business--and create according to your standard. I recognize that this isn't always easy, especially if you have a taste for fine linen, custom drapery from the finest silks and 100% wool carpeting with a $1000 budget, but you can always start somewhere. Use your home as a canvas. Create smaller vignettes that articulate your style. Imagine that you're working with your ideal client--what would you create for them? Even if it's nothing other than a case study or concept board, create like you're already where you want to be. After all...everyone knows that the fastest way to get what you want is to BE what you want. And like Ray Kinsella said in Field of Dreams"If you build it, they will come." So get to building!

4. Be consistent.  Quality control, quality control, quality control! Be sure that the work you present to the world represents the kind of work you actually want to be doing in your business...all the time. If French Country isn't your thing but you happen to have taken on a few of those projects, don't share those images (or even pay for professional photography) on your website or social media accounts. A client would rather see one stellar project that represents the kind of work you're passionate about on your website versus 40 photos of a mix of styles that will confuse them about who you are and what your area of expertise is (besides taking the first check that comes along!). If you're a budding photographer and only 3 of your last 20 photo shoots met your expectations, only share the 3 you love and share those projects until the wheels fall off! Again, when you're consistently communicating who you are and who you want to be in business, you make it easier for the people who are looking for YOUR area of expertise to find you.

5. Ask for what you want. If you want a certain type of client, ask for them! I don't mean beg and plead in their face, but when you're networking and sharing about your business, speak with confidence about who you want to work with. When you run across your ideal client in your daily travels, communicate your desire to work with them and share not only how you can be of assistance to them but why/how your business or product would be a great fit for their project(or a project you can create). You have not, because you ask not...sometimes it really is that simple.

Are you working with you ideal clients?  Have any advice to share? If so, please chime in below!
