There is nothing quite like Parisian Style. I will never forget the very first decorating book I ever purchased. It was The Paris Apartment. I was absolutely obsessed with the way that the Parisians decorate their homes so effortlessly. Fabrics and femininity. I used to dream of shopping at the flea markets in Paris to decorate my home. When I began to study how Parisian women lived, I really decided to commit to living with Parisian flair. This was long before blogs and the internet really, so magazines and books were my only transportation to get there. Perhaps that's why I love magazines so much.
Naturally in my work, there is always an essence of Parisian style. Whether its an ornate gold mirror, Louis IV chair or glamorous chandelier, I really like the essence that a Parisian touch gives to any space. Let me break down a few ways you can incorporate Parisian flair into your home, too.
White walls. Parisians, much like New Yorkers, tend to live in teeny spaces so slathering a crisp white coat of paint is a must for a Parisian. It opens up the space allows the decor to bask in the direct sunlight.
Mirrors & mirrored furniture. Speaking of natural light, mirrored pieces bounce light around a space so a mirrored wall or a large ornate floor mirror are always going to be Parisian apartment staples.
Puddled drapes. For some reason, the French are not shy of layering on the fabrics. Perhaps its the femininity of the look. The puddled drapes brush the floor giving the effect of fashion, almost like a ball gown.
Conversation spaces. The television isn't ever really a focal point in Parisian apartments. Sitting areas seem to be more popular when decorating a home. Your priority is creating conversational areas where you can have tea, enjoy wine and some very good conversation tend to be the focus.
Fireplaces. What fabulous French girl doesn't dream of a beautiful fireplace? It doesn't actually have to work, but having a glamorous fireplace mantle in a home is essential for Parisian flair. I have put faux fireplace mantles in my clients high rise condos for the effect, you can just fill them up with tapered candles at assorted heights.
Fabulous seating. There is nothing more luxurious than a gorgeous place to sit down and relax. This is the effortlessness of the French. You will often find a comfortable chair/place to sit just about anywhere. Also, a comfortable place to enjoy a phone call, journal, sketch or indulge in a croissant.
Glamorous lighting. Lighting is such an important part of any space but most importantly a Parisian space. It's like the jewelry of the room. Especially a statement chandelier like these. The bigger the better.
Gorgeous glassware & dishes. Coffee cups with a saucer and a floral pattern, crystal champagne glasses, champagne and wine bucket stands. The French way is using the best, most beautiful dining accoutrements, the luxurious way.
A vanity. Every Parisian woman understands the importance of beautifying. So, of course your primping station should be fabulous and glamorous, decked out with sheepskin rugs, crystal sconces, venetian mirrors and French Girl beauty products.
Anything tufted. Tufting was a very popular method of holding together fashion garments which quickly became popular in furnishing too. Parisians love tufted pieces in their homes.
Candles. Perfuming is all the rage in Paris, so a Parisian style home must have beautiful fragrances burning at all times.
Layered fabrics. Blankets, rugs, towels in the bath. Making comfort chic & easily accessible makes for an effortlessly stylish and cozy space.
