21 Chic Holiday Travel Outfits (What to Wear to the Airport and Still Look Effortless)

If you've ever flown over the holidays, you know it's one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. Long security lines, packed gates, delays, and that rush to get you to the people you love.

Here's what I've learned after years of holiday travel: the less you have to think about on travel day, the calmer you feel. That starts with knowing exactly what you're wearing to the airport.

So I put this list together for you. These are 21 holiday travel outfits, made for Thanksgiving and every trip through New Year's, that are comfortable enough for a long flight and chic enough that you'll feel good walking through the terminal, hugging family at arrivals, or heading straight to dinner. Every holiday travel look is something you can recreate with pieces you probably already own.

Pick your favorite, lay it out the night before, and let that be one less thing on your mind. You can thank me when you're cozy in seat 17c (hello Lisa Barlow) with your sweater, your snacks, and zero outfit regrets.

My Chic Airport Outfit Formula

Every great airport outfit has five parts. Once you know them, you can build a travel look in five minutes with what's already in your closet.

  1. A soft, stretchy base. Joggers, wide-leg knit pants, leggings, or relaxed jeans with some give. You'll be sitting for hours, so the waistband matters more than anything.

  2. One polished layer. A long wool coat, a blazer, or a trench. This is the piece that makes a comfy outfit look intentional.

  3. A cozy wrap or scarf. Planes are cold. A big scarf works as a blanket, a pillow, and the prettiest accessory in your look.

  4. Easy shoes. Sneakers or slip-ons you can take off fast at security and walk a long terminal in.

  5. One "I meant to look this good" detail. A ball cap, great sunglasses, gold hoops, or a structured bag. One is enough.

Bonus rule: stick to two or three colors. A tight color palette makes everything look more expensive, and it means every piece you pack works with every other piece.

21 Classy + Effortless Holiday Travel Airport Outfit Ideas

01 | All-Black Outfit with a Cashmere Wrap & baseball cap

This is my go-to Thanksgiving travel outfit, and it's proof that sweatpants can look chic. Head-to-toe black reads polished, hides any coffee spills, and works whether you land somewhere freezing or somewhere mild.

What makes it work is the oversized brown wrap thrown over my shoulders. It breaks up all the black, it's soft enough to sleep in on the plane, and it looks like you tried a lot harder than you actually did. The long coat adds structure, so the joggers look intentional instead of "I rolled out of bed."

The cap and big sunglasses are my secret for early flights. No makeup, no blowout, no problem. And the cream sneakers with white crew socks keep the look fresh and young instead of heavy.

Why it works for Holiday travel: The coat goes in the overhead bin, the wrap becomes your blanket, and you can walk straight from the airport into a family dinner without changing. Swap the cap for gold hoops and the sneakers for ankle boots and you're ready for the table.

Budget tip: You don't need cashmere. Any oversized knit scarf in a warm neutral gives you the same look for a fraction of the price.

02 | Teddy Coat and Leggings Uniform

If you want the comfiest outfit on this list that still looks pulled together, this is it. Black leggings and a fitted top feel like pajamas on a long flight, and the oversized teddy coat over them makes it look completely intentional.

The long, fuzzy coat does all the work here. It's cozy enough to curl up in at the gate, warm enough for a cold landing, and that slouchy, oversized fit is what makes leggings look chic instead of gym-ready. Keeping everything black creates one long line from shoulder to ankle, which is so flattering.

The details give it personality. Silver sneakers add a little shine, tortoiseshell glasses and layered gold necklaces soften all the black, and a messy top knot keeps your hair off your face for the whole trip.

Why it works for Holiday travel: Leggings stretch with you through a long flight and a big meal. The coat goes over everything, so you can wear a thin layer underneath and still stay warm when you land somewhere cold.

Style tip: Choose a bodysuit instead of a regular top. It stays tucked in when you're lifting bags into the overhead bin, so the look stays smooth all day.

03 | Oversized Shirt and Draped Sweater

Woman in a casual airport outfit with an oversized white striped button-down shirt, an olive green sweater draped over her shoulders, black leggings, black chunky loafers, and a cream shoulder bag.

This is the look for anyone who wants to feel comfy on the plane but look like they just walked out of a Parisian apartment. An oversized button-down over leggings is one of the easiest airport formulas there is. It's breezy, it covers everything, and it looks polished without trying.

The olive sweater tied over the shoulders is the star. It adds a pop of fall color that feels perfect for Thanksgiving, and when the plane gets chilly, you just untie it and pull it on. It's a layer and an accessory in one.

The chunky black loafers make it feel elevated instead of sporty. They slip on and off fast at security, and they look just as good at the dinner table as they do at the gate.

Why it works for holiday travel: It goes from airport to dinner without a change. Untuck the shirt for the flight, then half-tuck it, add earrings, and you're ready for the table.

Style tip: Choose a shirt long enough to cover your hips. That longer length is what makes leggings look chic, and it keeps you comfortable when you're sitting for hours.

04 | Chocolate Brown Monochrome

Woman in an all-brown travel outfit with an oversized chocolate blazer, brown turtleneck sweater, brown mini skirt, sheer black tights, a brown cap, suede sneakers, and a large brown leather tote.

I love this look so much because brown is the new black, and this tonal look proves it. Wearing one rich color from your cap to your shoes is the fastest way to look expensive, and chocolate brown feels so right for Thanksgiving. It's warm, cozy, and pairs with every fall color on the dinner table.

The oversized blazer is what makes this outfit. It's slouchy enough to be comfortable on a flight but sharp enough to look polished. Underneath, a turtleneck and mini skirt with sheer tights give you that effortless, cool-girl street style look, while still keeping your legs covered and warm on a cold plane.

The suede sneakers and slouchy socks keep it casual and easy to walk in. And that big leather tote holds everything: laptop, snacks, a scarf, and your boarding pass, with room to spare.

Why it works for holiday travel: It's an airport-to-dinner outfit that's already dressed up. Take off the cap, swap the sneakers for knee boots, and you're ready for a holiday party.

Style tip: Mix textures in the same color, like wool, suede, knit, and leather. That's what keeps a monochrome outfit from looking flat.

05 | Long Puffer with Cozy Creams

Flying somewhere cold for the holidays? This is your outfit. A long puffer coat keeps you warm from the parking lot to the gate to the rental car line, and you won't regret it for a second when you land in a freezing city.

The secret is what's underneath. Winter whites, a cream sweater and cream wide-leg pants, make a puffer look soft and luxe instead of bulky. The contrast with the black coat is so clean, and the flowy pants feel like pajamas on the plane.

The chestnut platform boots add warmth and a little height, and they slip right on and off at security. A knit headband keeps your ears warm and your hair out of your face, and the quilted bag brings in one more cozy texture.

Why it works for holiday travel: It's the warmest look on this list, made for snowy destinations and early-morning flights. The puffer also makes a great pillow on the plane.

Style tip: Worried about wearing white while you travel? Choose a knit or crepe fabric that hides wrinkles, and pack a stain pen in your bag just in case.

06 | Sweater Dress and White Sneakers

One piece, done. A knit sweater dress is the ultimate no-thinking airport outfit. You pull it on, add sneakers, and you're out the door. No waistband digging in on a long flight, no top and bottom to match, and it feels like wearing your coziest sweater from head to ankle.

The soft oatmeal color is what makes it feel elevated. It's calm and neutral, and it looks just as right at the gate as it does at the Thanksgiving table. The V-neck gives you a place to show off layered gold necklaces, which keeps the look from feeling too plain.

White sneakers keep it casual and comfortable for long walks to your gate. Ones with Velcro straps are a little travel secret, because they come off and go back on at security in two seconds. A big woven tote holds all your essentials and adds a rich brown contrast.

Why it works for holiday travel: It's an airport-to-dinner outfit with zero effort. Swap the sneakers for ankle boots or knee boots, add a belt if you want more shape, and you're dressed for the table.

Style tip: Flying somewhere cold? Add a long coat and a big scarf, or wear thin leggings under the dress. You get extra warmth without changing the look.

07 | Cable-Knit Matching Pant Set

If you could fly in a cozy blanket and still look chic, this would be it. A matching cable-knit set is the dream airport outfit. It feels like loungewear, but because the top and pants match, it looks completely put together, like you planned it (because you did).

The taupe color on this set is what makes it feel so luxe. It's warm, soft, and very Thanksgiving, and it hides the little wrinkles and creases that come with a long day of travel. The half-zip collar lets you zip up when the plane gets cold or open it up when the terminal feels warm.

The chestnut platform slippers are basically wearing a cloud through the airport. They slip on and off at security and keep your feet warm on the plane. A low bun, gold aviators, and a slouchy cream bag finish it off with that easy, rich-girl weekend feeling.

Why it works for holiday travel: Matching sets are the easiest way to look polished with zero effort, and knit pants have plenty of room for that second helping of pie. You can also wear the pieces separately all week to make your suitcase stretch further.

Style tip: On a long flight, tuck a thin tank or bodysuit under the sweater. If the cabin gets warm, you can take the sweater off and still look put together.

08 | Cable-Knit Sweater and Maxi Skirt

Woman ready for Thanksgiving travel in an oversized oatmeal cable-knit sweater, a matching cable-knit maxi skirt, white sneakers, and gold hoops, holding a coffee next to a rose gold carry-on suitcase.

If you love the idea of a matching knit set but want something a little more feminine, try the skirt version. An oversized cable-knit sweater with a matching maxi skirt feels just as cozy as sweatpants, but it looks like you're headed to a cabin weekend or a cozy holiday brunch.

The long skirt is surprisingly perfect for flying. It's soft and stretchy, it covers your legs so you stay warm on a cold plane, and you can sit cross-legged in your seat without a second thought. The chunky cable texture keeps the neutral oatmeal color from feeling plain.

White sneakers make it travel-friendly and keep it from feeling too dressy. Add gold hoops, a few stacked rings, a coffee in hand, and a carry-on that matches your vibe, and you're the most put-together person at the gate.

Why it works for holiday travel: It's airport-to-dinner ready the moment you land. Swap the sneakers for knee boots or heeled ankle boots, and you're dressed up enough for the holiday table without changing a thing.

Style tip: Knit skirts can cling to tights and leggings, so wear a smooth slip or skip the tights and choose tall socks or boots instead. The skirt will hang beautifully all day.

09 | Chunky Sweater and Brown Leggings

This is the leggings outfit for anyone who wants to feel cozy but still look like they have their life together. A big, chunky hand-knit sweater over leggings is one of the comfiest things you can wear on a plane, and the oversized bell sleeves make it feel boho and special instead of basic.

The little twist that makes this look so good is the brown leggings. Swapping black for chocolate brown leggings instantly feels softer and more fall, and it pairs so beautifully with an oatmeal sweater. It's an easy upgrade most people never think of.

The chrome retro sneakers add a sporty, trendy edge, and a small quilted crossbody keeps your phone, ID, and boarding pass close without weighing you down. Clear-frame glasses finish the look for that "I just woke up like this" early-flight energy.

Why it works for holiday travel: It's pure comfort for a long travel day. The sweater is long enough to cover your hips, the leggings stretch with you, and the sneakers are made for sprinting to a connecting flight.

Style tip: Add chic socks to stay warm and stylish.

Airplanes get cold, and your ankles are usually the first thing to freeze. A pair of cute Ralph Lauren teddy bear socks keeps you warm from the gate to your seat, and it's the easiest way to add personality to a neutral outfit.

Pull them up over your leggings or sweatpants and pair them with sneakers or platform slippers. Teddy bear socks, cozy cable-knit socks, or a fun pop of color all work. Bonus: when you slip your shoes off at security or kick them off on the plane, your socks still look cute.

10 | Blazer and Sweatpants

Woman in a chic airport outfit with an oversized chocolate brown blazer, white tee, gray wide-leg sweatpants, a printed silk neck scarf, brown cap, black sunglasses, gold jewelry, and a brown suede tote bag.

Image & styling Sandrine

This is the high-low look that every street style star swears by, and it's genius for travel. Wide leg brown sweatpants on the bottom for total comfort, a sharp oversized blazer on top so you look like you're headed to a meeting in Paris. It's the easiest way to make loungewear look expensive.

The wide-leg sweatpants are key. They're relaxed and flowy instead of cuffed at the ankle, so they read more "trouser" than "gym." Paired with a crisp white tee and a chocolate blazer, the whole outfit feels polished but still totally comfortable for a long flight.

The accessories are where the magic happens. A silk scarf tied at the neck, a brown cap, chunky gold rings and earrings, and a slouchy suede tote turn a simple outfit into a whole moment. Coffee in hand optional, but highly recommended.

Why it works for holiday travel: You get sweatpants comfort with a blazer that looks great in every photo, from the gate to the family hug at arrivals. Pack a pair of trousers or jeans and you can wear the same blazer to dinner.

Style tip: A coordinating silk scarf is the best little travel accessory. Tie it at your neck for the airport, use it as a headband on a bad hair day, or knot it on your bag strap. It takes up zero room in your bag.

11 | Cozy Over the Shoulder Sweater

This outfit looks like you're headed to a business meeting, but your feet are secretly wearing slippers. That's the whole charm. All-black tailoring on top and cozy platform slippers on the bottom is such a cool, unexpected mix, and it's one of the comfiest ways to look sharp at the airport.

The relaxed trousers are cuffed at the ankle, which shows off the slippers and keeps the hem from dragging through the terminal.

The oatmeal sweater draped over the shoulders softens all that black and adds a little warmth. When the cabin gets cold, it goes right on. Hold your coffee and you're officially the chicest person in the boarding line.

Why it works for holiday travel: Slippers are the fastest shoes through security and the coziest on a cold plane. Swap them for loafers or ankle boots when you land and the rest of the outfit is already dinner-ready.

Style tip: Cuff your trousers once or twice so they hit just above the ankle. It makes flat, chunky shoes look intentional and keeps your hem clean on airport floors.

12 | Quiet Luxury Winter White Look

If your style is clean, minimal, and a little bit luxe, this is your airport outfit. Head-to-toe white with soft beige accents feels so fresh, and it's the kind of look that makes people wonder if you're flying first class (even if you're in row 32).

The white wide-leg jeans with a raw hem keep it relaxed, while a fitted white bodysuit keeps everything sleek and tucked. The beige sweater draped over the shoulders adds warmth and that effortless, old-money touch, and a matching beige cap hides any early-morning hair.

The cream suede loafers are the quiet hero here. They're soft, flat, and slip off in seconds at security, but they look so much more elevated than sneakers. A structured taupe bag, a gold watch, and a few rings pull it all together.

Why it works for holiday travel: It's polished enough to meet the in-laws straight from the airport, and the soft suede loafers are comfy for long walks to the gate. Take off the cap, add earrings, and you're ready for dinner.

Style tip: Stick to one color family, like white, cream, and beige, and change only the textures (denim, knit, suede, leather). That's the secret to the quiet luxury look, and it makes inexpensive pieces look designer.

13 | Camel Utility Jacket and Black Flares

This is the real-life airport outfit that proves travel day can still be your best-dressed day. A belted camel jacket instantly makes everything look polished, and paired with black wide-leg pants and sneakers, it hits that sweet spot between comfy and put together.

The cropped, belted jacket is the star. It's warm, it has pockets for your phone and boarding pass, and cinching it at the waist gives you shape, so you never look swallowed up in a big coat. Black flare pants underneath are soft and stretchy but read like real trousers, and they look so good with chunky sneakers peeking out.

The accessories make it travel-ready. A beige cap for a no-makeup morning, a small crossbody for your essentials, and a suede duffel stacked on your carry-on with a cozy wrap tucked on top for the plane. It's the kind of airport setup that just looks organized.

Why it works for holiday travel: Camel, black, and cream are the easiest color trio to pack around. Every top and bottom in your suitcase will work with this jacket, so you can rewear it all week.

Style tip: Slide your duffel over your carry-on handle and tuck your wrap on top. You'll have both hands free for coffee and your phone, and your plane blanket is always within reach.

14 | Cream Coat and Varsity Sweatshirt

This is the sporty, cool-girl airport outfit, and it's so fun. A long cream wool coat makes it look elegant, while the varsity-style sweatshirt and leggings underneath keep it relaxed and comfy. It's that perfect mix of "I'm cozy" and "I'm chic" that makes travel days feel easy.

The olive green sweatshirt is what makes this look pop. It adds a rich fall color against all the cream, and it pairs so well with the green stripes on the socks. Cream leggings instead of black feel fresh and unexpected, and they make the long coat look even more luxe.

The sporty details pull it all together. Striped socks pulled up over the leggings, chunky white sneakers, and a gray cap give it a fun, athletic vibe. A structured black handbag balances it out, so the outfit still looks polished from the gate to arrivals.

Why it works for holiday travel: The sweatshirt and leggings feel like loungewear on a long flight, but the coat makes it look like you put real thought into your outfit. It's also an easy look for running around town with family once you land.

Style tip: Pair one casual piece with one polished piece. A sweatshirt under a long wool coat is the easiest way to look effortlessly chic, and it works with any graphic tee or hoodie you already own.

15 | Gray Knit Set for Warm Destinations

Not everyone is flying somewhere snowy for the holidays. If you're headed somewhere warm, like Florida, California, Arizona, or Mexico, this is the outfit for you. A sleeveless knit set keeps you cool when you land, and a jacket over the shoulders keeps you warm on the plane.

The light gray matching set is soft, simple, and so elevated. The sleeveless turtleneck feels polished without being too warm, and the flowy wide-leg pants are as comfortable as sweatpants. One soft color from neck to ankle makes the whole look feel calm and expensive.

The olive jacket thrown over the shoulders is the perfect travel layer. It adds a pop of fall color and comes off the second you step into the sunshine. Fun statement sunglasses, white sneakers, and a roomy canvas tote stacked on your carry-on finish the look with that jet-set feeling.

Why it works for holiday travel: It covers both temperatures in one outfit. Wear the jacket at the cold airport and on the plane, then take it off when you land somewhere warm, and you're already dressed for a sunny Thanksgiving.

Style tip: Pick a big tote that fits your jacket, a magazine, snacks, and a water bottle. It slides right over your carry-on handle, and when the jacket comes off, it has somewhere to go.

16 | Mushroom Coat Over a Matching Knit Set

This is the most expensive-looking outfit on the list, and it's basically pajamas under a great coat. A soft matching knit set with a long wool coat in the exact same mushroom shade creates one seamless head-to-toe look that feels like pure luxury.

The oversized brown coat is everything here. It's long, slouchy, and dramatic, so it instantly turns a simple sweater and knit pants into an outfit that looks straight off the runway. Wearing all three pieces in the same color makes you look taller and polished, without any effort at all.

Chestnut suede slippers and a cognac quilted bag add just a little warmth to the taupe, so the look doesn't feel flat. A slicked-back bun and dark sunglasses finish it with that celebrity-at-the-airport energy.

Why it works for holiday travel: This top rated cozy knit set feels like loungewear on the plane, and the coat makes you look completely dressed up the second you land. Taupe and mocha also hide wrinkles and lint better than black.

Style tip: A slicked-back bun is the best travel hairstyle. It survives a long flight, a cap, and a nap on the plane, and it always looks intentional. Tuck a mini brush and a little hair gel or balm in your bag for a quick fix before landing.

17 | Chocolate Maxi Coat and Cream Knits

Chocolate and cream is one of the prettiest color combos for the holidays, and this outfit is proof. A dramatic floor-length brown coat over soft cream knits feels cozy, rich, and so elegant, like you're catching a flight to a ski lodge or a holiday weekend in New York.

The maxi coat is the statement. That long, sweeping length looks incredibly chic as you walk through the terminal, and it keeps you warm from head to toe on a cold travel day. Underneath, cream knit pants feel like loungewear, so you're comfortable from takeoff to landing.

The little details tie it all together. A cream sweater knotted over the shoulders adds warmth and texture, a white cap keeps it casual, and brown and white retro sneakers repeat the colors of the outfit perfectly. A taupe tote on a matching brown carry-on makes the whole look feel planned.

Why it works for Thanksgiving travel: It's warm enough for the coldest destinations and cozy enough for a long flight. The chocolate and cream color palette works for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and every trip in between.

Style tip: Choose sneakers that repeat your outfit colors, like brown and white with a brown coat and cream pants. It makes casual shoes look like part of the plan instead of an afterthought.

18 | Navy Peacoat and Satin Trousers

If you want to look like you're jetting off to Europe for the holidays, this is the outfit. A navy cropped peacoat and flowy cream satin pants feel classic, polished, and a little bit old money, but every piece is soft enough for a long flight.

Navy is such a nice break from all the black and brown. It feels rich and timeless, and the gold buttons add a touch of shine that looks so pretty around the holidays. The cream satin wide-leg pants are the secret to comfort. They're silky and loose, so they never pinch or bunch up when you're sitting for hours.

The cognac suede loafers bring in warmth and slip off easily at security. A silk scarf at the neck, a structured taupe bag, and a cognac tote on a silver carry-on make this look feel like a first-class ticket.

Why it works for Thanksgiving travel: Satin pants feel like pajamas but look like dinner pants, so you're ready for the table the moment you land. The navy cropped peacoat is warm without being bulky, so it fits easily in the overhead bin.

Style tip: Clip your over-ear headphones to your tote or carry-on handle. They're always within reach for the flight, they keep your hands free, and they become a cute accessory instead of something buried in your bag.

19 | Cable-Knit Matching Set and Burgundy Cap

This is what it looks like to be the coziest person at the gate. A matching cable-knit sweater over knit pants set is basically wearing a blanket through the airport, and it still looks so elegant. It's the outfit for long layovers, early mornings, and anyone who gets cold on every flight.

The poncho is genius for travel. There are no sleeves to fight with when you're carrying bags, it drapes over you like a throw when you sit down, and the hood is perfect for a nap on the plane. The matching wide-leg pants make it feel like one polished look instead of loungewear.

The burgundy baseball cap is the pop of color that makes the whole outfit. It's rich, festive, and perfect for the holidays against all that soft oatmeal. Silver headphones, a gold watch, a few rings, and white sneakers finish it off with that relaxed jet-set feeling.

Why it works for Thanksgiving travel: It doubles as your plane blanket, so you can skip packing one. The knit set is stretchy and soft for a long travel day and a big Thanksgiving meal.

Style tip: Add one pop of holiday color to a neutral outfit with a cap, scarf, or bag. Burgundy, deep green, or cranberry red instantly makes a cream or beige look feel festive, without having to buy a whole new outfit.

20 | Tailored Vest and Trouser Set

If you're flying somewhere sunny for the holidays, or you just run warm on planes, this tailored set is so chic. A matching vest and wide-leg trousers look like a suit, but they feel light and easy, and they're polished enough to go straight from the plane to a lunch reservation.

The vest is the trendy piece here. It's sleeveless, so you'll never overheat in a crowded terminal, but it's tailored, so it looks far more put together than a tank top. Pleated wide-leg trousers in the same beige make it a full set and give you plenty of room to move on a long flight.

The gray sweater knotted over the shoulders is your plane layer. When the cabin gets cold, untie it and pull it on. A beige cap, layered gold jewelry, and a structured cream bag with a fun puffy star charm add personality without breaking the soft, neutral palette.

Why it works for Thanksgiving travel: It's perfect for warm-weather Thanksgiving destinations and for dinner with family. Add earrings, swap the cap for a claw clip, and the vest and trousers are already dressy enough for the table.

Style tip: Add a bag charm. It's one of the cutest trends right now and the easiest way to make a simple bag feel new. It also makes your bag easy to spot under the seat in front of you.

21 | Classic Trench and White Sweatpants

We're ending with a classic. A trench coat is the most timeless travel piece you can own, and wearing it over white sweatpants and a graphic tee is the perfect mix of polished and playful. It looks like you're strolling through an airport in Milan, but it feels like a lazy Sunday.

A long tan trench coatdoes all the heavy lifting. It's lightweight but adds structure, it has deep pockets for your phone and passport, and it instantly makes casual pieces look expensive. White wide-leg sweatpants keep you comfy, and a cute teddy bear graphic tee adds a little fun and personality.

The details make it feel fresh. Brown and white retro sneakers pick up the trench's warm tones, white oval sunglasses and red lips bring the glamour, and a puffy quilted tote stacked on your carry-on holds everything you need for the flight.

Why it works for Thanksgiving travel: A trench is perfect for mild-weather destinations and layers easily over a sweater if it's colder. It also looks great in every holiday photo, from the airport to the front porch.

Style tip: Red lipstick is the fastest travel glow-up. After a long flight, a swipe of red lip makes you look awake and put together in two seconds, so keep one in your personal item.

Holiday Travel Day Tips (So You Don't Overpack)

Holidays at the airport can feel overwhelming to say the least. A little planning makes those days so much easier.

  • Wear your bulkiest pieces on the plane. Your coat, boots, and big scarf take up the most room in a suitcase. Wear them and you can usually fit everything else in a carry-on.

  • Plan your outfits around one color palette. Pick two or three colors (black, camel, and cream is my favorite) so every top works with every bottom. Four days can fit in a carry-on with this one trick.

  • Make security easy. Slip-on sneakers, no belt, and minimal jewelry mean you won't be the one holding up the line. Keep your rings and watch in your bag until you're through.

  • Layer for every temperature. The airport is warm, the plane is cold, and your destination could be anything. A base layer, a sweater or wrap, and a coat cover all of it.

  • Pack one "dinner" piece in your personal item. A silky top, a nice sweater, or a pair of earrings means you can change in five minutes if your flight is late and you have to go straight to the table.

  • Bring a travel kit for your face. Lip balm, hand cream, a face mist, and a mini mascara. Cabin air is dry, and a two-minute refresh before landing makes you feel human again.

  • Lay it all out the night before. Outfit, ID, chargers, snacks. Thanksgiving morning traffic is no joke, and you'll leave the house calm instead of rushing.

FAQ: What to Wear to the Airport for Holiday travel

What should I wear to the airport? Wear soft, stretchy pants, a cozy top, a polished layer like a long coat or blazer, and sneakers you can slip off at security. Add a big scarf for the cold plane and one accessory, like a cap or gold earrings, so the outfit looks put together.

How can I look chic but comfortable at the airport? Keep the colors simple and add one structured piece. Joggers with a long wool coat look chic. Joggers with a hoodie look like a lazy day. The structured layer is what makes comfortable clothes look intentional.

Are leggings OK to wear to the airport? Yes. Leggings are one of the comfiest choices for a long flight. Pair them with an oversized sweater or long cardigan and a coat so the look feels finished, not like you're headed to the gym.

What shoes are best for the airport? Chunky sneakers, slip-on loafers, or flat ankle boots with a side zip. Skip laces that take forever and heels you can't walk a long terminal in.

What should you not wear to the airport? Avoid stiff jeans with no stretch, lots of metal jewelry or big belts, shoes that are hard to take off, and anything that gets wrinkled easily. Also skip a single thin layer, because planes get cold.

What do I wear if I'm flying from somewhere warm to somewhere cold? Dress in layers you can add as you go. Start with a tee or thin knit, carry a sweater and wrap, and either wear or carry your heavy coat. You'll be comfortable at your departure gate and warm when you land.

Can I go straight from the airport to Thanksgiving dinner? Yes, if you plan for it. Choose a sweater dress, nice trousers, or dark jeans, and pack earrings, lipstick, and a pair of boots in your personal item. A two-minute swap in the airport bathroom and you're ready for the table.
