17 Glamorous Ways to Decorate with Green: Elegant Home Ideas for Fall and Beyond

ashlina kaposta August 20, 2024

Green has a magical way of bringing life and serenity into a space. It’s the color of nature, renewal, and energy—a perfect hue to infuse your home with a fresh and vibrant feel.

In my bedroom, I chose the most gorgeous shade of deep green, Secret Garden Green by Sherwin Williams.

According to Feng Shui, the bedroom should have a very Yin, feminine energy. So, choosing the right color was necessary for me to create the ultimate bedroom sanctuary. Green is representative of life, growth and love. It stimulates and supports the heart chakra.

The color green symbolizes regeneration, new life, and renewal. It's also associated with the wood element, which represents growth, decisiveness, and action. Green can also represent stability, serenity, and fertility, and can indicate when nature and life are at their peaks.

Whether you’re looking to create a calming sanctuary or add a bold, lively touch to your rooms, here’s how to make green work for you in your home decor.

1. Start Small with Accessories

If you’re new to decorating with green, starting small is the way to go. Introduce green through accessories like throw pillows, blankets, or curtains. This allows you to get a feel for how the color complements your existing decor without committing to something too permanent. A deep emerald throw over a neutral couch can instantly elevate the room, while lime green cushions can add a pop of fun and energy.

2. Incorporate Greenery

There’s no better way to bring green into your home than with actual plants. Houseplants not only add color but also purify the air and create a sense of calm. From the statement-making fiddle leaf fig to the humble spider plant, greenery can transform your space. Consider a mix of tall floor plants, small potted succulents, and hanging vines to add layers and dimension to your decor.

3. Paint an Accent Wall

If you’re ready to make a bolder statement, consider painting an accent wall in your favorite shade of green. Whether it’s a deep forest green for a cozy, dramatic effect or a soft sage green for a more subdued, peaceful vibe, an accent wall can anchor a room and serve as a stunning backdrop for your furniture and art. Pair it with natural wood tones and metallic accents to create a balanced and stylish look.

4. Green in Furniture and Rugs

Green isn’t just for walls and accessories—why not go big with your furniture? A green velvet sofa, a pair of moss-colored armchairs, or even a jade green rug can make a striking impact. These pieces can serve as the focal point of the room, around which you can build the rest of your decor. When using green in large pieces, balance it with neutral or muted tones in other areas to keep the space from feeling overwhelming.

5. Mix and Match Shades

Green comes in a myriad of shades, from mint to olive to emerald. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different tones in one room. For example, you can combine a soft pastel green with a bold, dark green for contrast. Layering various shades can add depth and interest to your decor, making the space feel dynamic and cohesive.

6. Complement with Natural Materials

Green pairs beautifully with natural materials like wood, stone, and rattan. Incorporate these elements through furniture, decor pieces, or flooring to create a harmonious look that feels grounded in nature. A green sofa against a backdrop of exposed brick, or green cushions on a rattan chair, can create a stylish, earthy vibe that’s both modern and timeless.

7. Use Green in Art and Decor

Art and decorative items are another great way to introduce green into your home. Look for artwork that features green landscapes, abstract green patterns, or botanical prints. Green vases, candles, and even books can also add subtle touches of the color throughout your space. These items can tie the room together and reinforce the green theme without overpowering the overall aesthetic.

8. Green in the Kitchen and Bathroom

Don’t overlook spaces like the kitchen and bathroom when decorating with green. A green backsplash, cabinetry, or tilework can add character and warmth to these often-overlooked areas. Pairing green with white or gray can keep these spaces looking fresh and clean, while green towels, mats, and accessories can provide an easy, non-permanent update.

Serge Mouille: lighting that works with every style

ashlina kaposta September 13, 2017

It's interesting to me that my latest design clients all have living areas with an open floor plan. Meaning that the living, dining and kitchen area are all open and connected. One of the most important aspects of getting an open floor plan look right is making sure that the lighting mix works well together. This can be difficult to do which is why my clients go looking for a designer in the first place.

In one of my recent client spaces breakfast area ( see above photo ) we used a Serge Mouille style light. With all of the other light fixtures in the open space, we needed something that didn't overwhelm the space yet still be stylish and practical. You can get an original Serge Mouille light or there are plenty of 'look alikes' out there if you are wanting an affordable option too.

It's a look that has been around for years, launched in Paris circa 1953. At that time, they were a staple fixture in the most chic Parisian interiors. Currently, the light is being used all over the world in the most gorgeous of spaces. It's on trend, adds a chic element and works itself into any style space. Take a look at some of my favorite rooms with the chic light fixtures and see if your home needs one too. It could be just the fixture you have been looking for.
