My Morning Ritual for a Harmonious Work From Home Space (2026 Guide)

ashlina kaposta April 15, 2026

Updated for 2026 | Originally published 2017

I remember the early days of working from home like they were yesterday.

I was exhausted. Scattered. Completely reactive — letting emails, client messages, and the noise of the outside world dictate my entire day before I'd even had a sip of coffee. I had big dreams, a creative mind, and zero boundaries around how I started my mornings.

Sound familiar?

Here's what I've learned after nearly two decades of working from home, building multiple income streams, and coaching hundreds of women to do the same: your morning ritual is the single most powerful business tool you own. And the physical space you create it in? That's the container that makes it all possible.

In this post I'm sharing my full morning ritual for creating a harmonious work from home space — the step-by-step flow I use to move from sleep to fully activated, clear, and ready to create. I'm also sharing how feng shui and intentional space design support everything, because your home either works for you or against you. There's no neutral.

Why Your Morning Ritual Changes Everything (The Science + The Woo)

Before I walk you through my ritual, let's talk about why this matters so much.

Research on what's called the Endowment Effect shows that when you start your day by taking one intentional action — any action — you create positive momentum that carries through everything that follows. You're not just making your bed. You're telling your nervous system: I am in charge of this day.

From a feng shui perspective, mornings are when the energy of your home is the most malleable. The space has been resting. It's quiet. What you bring into it first — your intentions, your rituals, your sensory environment — sets the energetic tone for every hour that follows.

And from a purely feminine energy standpoint, a slow, intentional morning is an act of self-respect. It's choosing yourself before you choose your inbox.

When your morning ritual is grounded and your space supports it, everything changes:

  • Your ideas become clearer

  • Your confidence rises

  • Your work feels less like hustle and more like flow

  • Your nervous system stays regulated throughout the day

  • And yes — your income follows

I've experienced this firsthand. The months where I protect my mornings are always my best creative and financial months. Always.

Setting the Stage: Creating a Sacred Work From Home Space

Before we get into the ritual itself, let's talk about the container. Because a sacred morning ritual deserves a sacred space.

You don't need a dedicated office or a lot of square footage. What you need is one intentionally designed area that signals to your mind and body: this is where I come to reconnect with myself. Here's how to create it.

Choose your anchor spot

Pick one corner, one chair, one window nook — somewhere that can hold your morning ritual consistently. Consistency in location trains your nervous system to drop into a calm, receptive state faster every time you return to that spot.

Apply these feng shui principles

After years of studying feng shui and working with clients on their spaces, these are the principles I return to again and again for work-from-home harmony:

Face your power position. In feng shui, the power position is where you can see the door without being directly in line with it. Sitting with your back to a wall (not a window) while facing the entrance to the room puts you in command of your space — and psychologically, you'll feel more secure and confident.

Clear the clutter first. Clutter is blocked energy. Before any ritual, any crystal grid, any candle — clear the surface you're working with. A clean surface signals to your brain that space exists for new ideas and possibilities.

Activate your wealth corner. In the bagua map, the far back left corner of any room (from the entrance) is your prosperity zone. Place something intentional there — a plant with rounded leaves, a bowl with crystals, a piece of art that represents abundance to you. You don't have to believe in it fully for it to work. Just try it.

Bring in living elements. Plants, fresh flowers, even a bowl of fresh fruit near your workspace activates the wood element in feng shui, which is associated with growth, creativity, and new beginnings. This is one of the easiest and most powerful upgrades you can make.

Scent sets the space. Your olfactory sense bypasses the analytical mind and goes straight to the limbic system — the emotional center of your brain. A consistent morning scent (a candle, a diffuser, a linen spray on your meditation cushion) creates a powerful ritual anchor. Over time, simply smelling that scent will drop you into your morning state.

My Step-by-Step Morning Ritual (6:30 – 9:30am)

This is the full flow I've refined over nearly two decades. You don't need to adopt every piece of it — start with one section and build from there. But I do recommend doing them in order, because each stage prepares you for the next.

6:30am — The First Five Minutes (Before You Touch Your Phone)

The first thing I do when I wake up — before my phone, before social media, before anything — is make my bed.

My grandmother instilled this in me and I've never stopped. It takes three minutes. It's a declaration that you are taking charge of your physical environment. It activates a small hit of dopamine (task completed) that primes you for more intentional action.

After making the bed, I lightly mist my pillows and linens with a linen spray. This single sensory ritual signals the transition from sleep to wakefulness in the gentlest way. It smells like the beginning of something beautiful.

Why this matters for your space: A made bed transforms the energy of your entire bedroom. The room feels calmer, more expansive, more intentional — and you feel like someone who has their life together, even before the day has started.

6:45am — Bathroom Reset + the Sacred Robe

I move straight to the bathroom for the basics — brush teeth, wash face, a splash of cold water. I keep my bathroom designed to feel like a calm retreat: a few candles, a plant, my favorite products arranged beautifully on the counter. Nothing excessive. Just intentional.

My robe hangs on the back of the door, ready the moment I walk out.

The robe is not a luxury. It's a ritual object. Putting on something soft, beautiful, and intentionally chosen is a way of telling your body: you are cared for. For women who spend most of their days giving to others — their families, their clients, their audiences — this is an important signal. You come first, at least for this hour.

Ashlina's picks: Look for robes that feel indulgent but are easy to care for — Turkish cotton, waffle weave, or silk-touch fabrics all work beautifully. (I link my current favorites in my Amazon shop.)

I love the tuberose diptyque candle for the mornings for some reason. This diffuser from Rituals is absolutely my favorite scent. It lasts for about 4-5 months and this is the smaller one. I also really love the pair of candlesticks which bring a Parisian flair that just makes me feel more glamorous.

7:00am — The Candle Lighting + Gratitude Prayer

Before coffee, before anything else — I light candles.

I keep fresh flowers and a collection of candles in a small corner of my bedroom. This is my altar space, my point of intentional pause. As I light each candle, I say a simple gratitude prayer. Something like: Thank you for this day. Thank you for this life. I am ready to receive.

It doesn't have to be elaborate. It doesn't have to be religious. It just has to be sincere.

The act of lighting a candle and speaking words of gratitude shifts your neurochemistry. You move from the mild cortisol spike of waking up into a softer, more receptive state. Gratitude, even when expressed briefly, activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the one responsible for rest, creativity, and connection.

Feng shui note: Candles activate the fire element, which governs passion, visibility, and inspiration. Lighting them with intention in your morning ritual is a simple way to invite more of all three into your day.

7:15am — Coffee With Intention

Coffee in this house is not a transaction. It's a ceremony.

I take my time making it. I add MCT oil (great for sustained energy and cognitive clarity without the crash). I use a beautiful mug that makes me happy to hold. And I do not drink it while scrolling my phone.

I turn on my meditation playlist at this point — soft piano, ambient sounds, occasionally a gentle guided visualization. The music sets the energetic field of the space before I sit down to meditate.

The space around your morning coffee matters. If your kitchen is cluttered, chaotic, or feels like a stressful place, your cortisol rises slightly every time you walk in. Over time, this becomes your baseline morning state. Small acts of beauty — a clean counter, a bunch of herbs in a glass by the sink, a candle on the windowsill — change this at a subtle but cumulative level.

7:30am — Movement + Fresh Air

Before meditation, I do five to ten minutes of gentle stretching or yoga-style movement. On good weather days, I take this outside — even just onto my balcony.

Fresh air in the morning is one of the most underrated nervous system regulators there is. It resets your circadian rhythm, raises oxygen levels, and grounds your energy in a way that indoor environments simply can't replicate.

If you work from home, this is especially important. Many of us go entire days without stepping outside. A few minutes of morning air changes the entire physiological experience of your workday.

7:45am — The Meditation Zone

This is the heart of my morning.

My meditation space has evolved over the years — from a single chair in the corner of my bedroom to a fully designed corner with layered candles, crystals, a comfortable seat, and soft lighting. You can see how I've styled various versions of it throughout my blog.

I keep my meditation playlist going: mostly instrumental or ambient sound, with occasional guided meditations woven in. My practice includes:

Stillness and presence. I aim to sit quietly and let my mind settle. Some days this takes two minutes. Some days twenty. I've stopped fighting it and started trusting whatever the practice wants to give me that day.

Prayer. For me, prayer is a form of meditation — asking, releasing, trusting. This is where I do my most honest inner work: naming what I need support with, expressing gratitude for what's arriving, letting go of what's not mine to carry.

Intuitive business thinking. When my mind is quiet, my clearest business ideas come to me. Not the anxious, reactive planning that happens when I'm on my phone — but the deep, inspired knowing that comes from being still. I keep a notepad nearby for these moments.

On the days meditation won't come: I skip to reading first, then return to stillness after. The goal is not a perfect practice. The goal is a consistent one.

8:15am — Reading + Journaling

This is my intellectual and emotional fuel.

I keep two or three books nearby — always a mix of something spiritual, something business-oriented, and something purely for pleasure. I read for fifteen to twenty minutes, just enough to fill my mind with something nourishing before I start creating.

Then I journal. My prompts are simple and consistent:

  • What am I grateful for today?

  • What's on my mind that I haven't said out loud?

  • What do I most need today?

  • What am I excited about?

  • What am I calling in?

I also keep a printed list of affirmations that I read aloud. Yes, out loud. The vibration of your own voice speaking words of truth and possibility does something that reading silently simply doesn't.

I snack lightly during this time — water with lemon and cucumber, a few blueberries, something hydrating and easy. Your brain runs on hydration, and most of us start the day already slightly dehydrated.

Journaling as a feng shui practice: In feng shui, writing is associated with the water element — flow, depth, and the processing of emotion. Journaling literally clears stagnant energy from your system and makes room for new insights, new ideas, and new energy to move through you.

9:00am — Nourishment + Fitness Preparation

I end my morning ritual with protein — either a smoothie before a workout class, or a beautiful breakfast on slower mornings.

The quality of what you eat in the morning is a direct signal to your body about how you intend to treat it today. A rushed, low-quality breakfast sends one message. A mindful, nourishing one sends another.

By 9:30am, when I sit down at my desk, I feel something I can only describe as ready. Clear-minded. Settled. Energized from the inside, not wired from caffeine and adrenaline.

This is the state from which I do my best work.

How to Design Your Own Morning Ritual Space

You don't need to replicate mine. You need to build yours. Here's a simple framework:

Start with one anchor object. A candle. A crystal. A notebook. A specific mug. Pick one object that will live in your ritual space and nothing else. Touch it every morning. This is how ritual becomes anchored in the body.

Layer in sensation. Sound (a playlist, gentle music, silence). Scent (a diffuser, candle, or linen spray). Texture (a soft robe, a smooth crystal in your palm, a warm mug). The more senses you engage, the more deeply embedded the ritual becomes.

Protect it fiercely. Your morning ritual is not optional when you're building something. It is the foundation everything else is built on. Guard those first hours like they are your most valuable business asset — because they are.

Use feng shui to support it. Clear the space. Add a living element. Activate your wealth corner. Face your power position. These aren't superstitions — they're environmental design principles that support the psychological states you need to thrive.

The Connection Between Your Morning Ritual and Your Income

I want to be direct with you about something, because I know many of you reading this are building businesses from home.

The mornings where I skip my ritual, start with my phone, and move straight into reactive mode are always my least productive and least profitable days. The mornings where I protect this time — even a shortened version of it — set a completely different trajectory.

Your morning ritual is where you regulate your nervous system, connect to your vision, and show up as the woman who creates her day rather than reacts to it. That woman makes better decisions. She takes bolder action. She shows up more confidently in her content, her conversations, and her offers.

If you're building an online business and you're feeling scattered, overwhelmed, or stuck — I'd gently ask: what does your morning look like right now?

This is the exact work we do inside She’s All In: The 21-day morning CEO activation— not just the strategy, but the energetic and lifestyle foundation that makes the strategy actually work. Because you can have all the right tactics and still feel like you're pushing a boulder uphill if your inner world isn't in alignment.

And if you're craving a deeper reset — of your body, your energy, your confidence, and your daily rhythms — the Glow Code is a 30-day feminine identity and wellness reset I created specifically for women who are ready to come back to themselves.

Your Morning Ritual Checklist (Save This)

Here's a simple version you can screenshot and stick on your mirror:

Upon waking:

  • Make your bed

  • Mist your linens

Bathroom ritual:

  • Wash face, brush teeth

  • Put on your robe

Candle + intention:

  • Light candles

  • Say your gratitude prayer

Coffee ceremony:

  • Make coffee intentionally

  • Turn on your playlist

  • No phone yet

Movement:

  • 5–10 minutes stretch or yoga

  • Fresh air if possible

Meditation:

  • Stillness, prayer, intuitive thinking

  • Notepad nearby for ideas

Reading + journaling:

  • 15 minutes reading

  • Journal your gratitude, feelings, intentions

  • Read affirmations aloud

Nourishment:

  • Hydrate (water with lemon)

  • Eat something intentional

Romanticize Your Mornings

I've been refining this ritual since 2008, and what it's given me — beyond the clarity and income — is a profound sense of ownership over my own life. I'm not living reactively. I'm not letting the outside world write the first chapter of my day.

Every single morning, I choose how I want to feel, what I want to create, and who I want to be that day. And then I design an environment that supports that choice.

That's what your home can do for you. That's what your morning ritual can do for you.

You deserve a life that feels as beautiful on the inside as it looks on the outside.

Start tomorrow. Start with one candle. Start somewhere.

I love you, Ashlina

14 Easy Wallpaper Projects to Upgrade Your Walls, Shelves, and More

ashlina kaposta September 22, 2025

Forget everything you thought you knew about wallpaper—it’s not dated, it’s not fussy, and it’s definitely not just for traditional homes. Wallpaper has made a major comeback, and today’s designs are chic, versatile, and unbelievably easy to work with. Whether you’re craving a bold statement wall, a subtle textured finish, or a quick renter-friendly update, wallpaper can completely transform your space with just a little creativity.

So why wallpaper?

  • Instant Personality: Wallpaper brings in color, pattern, and mood in a way that paint alone can’t. It’s the fastest way to show off your style.

  • Budget-Friendly Impact: A single roll can make a huge difference—use it on an accent wall, inside shelves, or even in small DIY projects.

  • Endless Options: From luxe grasscloth to playful murals to peel-and-stick designs, there’s a wallpaper for every taste, budget, and space.

  • Flexible & Forgiving: Removable wallpaper makes it commitment-free, perfect for renters or anyone who loves to switch things up often.

  • Designer’s Secret Weapon: Wallpaper has long been used by decorators to elevate even the simplest spaces, adding depth, texture, and sophistication where paint falls flat.

If you’ve been wanting to elevate your home but don’t know where to start, wallpaper might just be your secret weapon. Let’s dive into 14 creative wallpaper tricks you can try right now to bring your walls (and beyond) to life.

14 Easy Wallpaper Projects to Upgrade Your Walls, Shelves, and More

01 | Cover a room divider or screen with wallpaper & use as a headboard

One of the most unexpected and stylish ways to use wallpaper at home is by transforming a folding screen or room divider. Cover it in a bold pattern—like classic banana leaf wallpaper—and suddenly you’ve created a custom piece of furniture that doubles as a headboard. It’s a renter-friendly decorating hack, and it adds instant drama and personality to your bedroom without the cost of a new bed.

Why this works:

  • A wallpapered screen adds dimension and texture to the room, unlike a flat painted wall.

  • Banana leaf and tropical prints are timeless in interior design, bringing a fresh, airy vibe that feels like a luxury hotel.

  • Because the screen is movable, you can shift it behind your bed, use it to frame a reading nook, or even as a chic backdrop for Zoom calls or entertaining.

Styling tips:

  • Pair banana leaf wallpaper with crisp white bedding and layered neutral linens for a clean, resort-inspired look.

  • Add rattan or bamboo accents (lamps, trays, baskets) to play up the tropical style.

  • Mix in metallic accents like brass nightstands or a gold mirror to elevate the space from beachy to boutique-hotel chic.

  • For small apartments, use the divider as both a headboard and a room partition—perfect for creating zones in a studio.

👉 This idea also works with other bold patterns, like chinoiserie wallpaper, grasscloth, or art deco prints. No matter your style, wallpapering a screen is a designer-approved way to get a custom headboard look without the custom price tag.

02 | Frame wallpaper panels for an oversized art look

If you love the look of wallpaper but don’t want to commit to covering an entire wall, framing it as art is the perfect solution. Think of it as creating your own oversized statement piece—a single wallpaper panel can look just as striking as a large canvas painting, but at a fraction of the cost. This trick is especially popular with bold designs like chinoiserie murals, botanical prints, or moody florals.

Why this works:

  • Wallpaper has the power to act like art, especially when the pattern is detailed and oversized.

  • Framed panels are removable and renter-friendly, making them ideal for those who want impact without commitment.

  • This approach allows you to test bold wallpaper prints before covering an entire room.

Styling tips:

  • For a luxe, high-end look, frame two or three panels in a row to mimic the feel of a custom mural.

  • Use chinoiserie wallpaper panels in a dining room or entryway for a timeless, designer-inspired vibe.

  • Oversized tropical prints or banana leaf motifs work beautifully in modern, coastal, or glam spaces.

  • Hang framed panels above a sofa, console table, or bed for instant drama and scale.

  • Keep surrounding décor simple—let the wallpaper art be the star of the room.

👉 Bonus tip: You don’t even need a professional framer. Many decorators stretch wallpaper over foam board or plywood, then trim with simple molding for a DIY solution that looks custom.

03 | Wallpaper behind open shelving for dramatic effect

Fornasetti faces wallpaper has always a favorite of mine. Even my Carrie Bradshaw office can attest to my love for it. It looks so cool in a kitchen, powder bathroom or a closet.

Kitchens often lean practical, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. One of the easiest ways to add depth and charm is by lining the wall behind open shelving with wallpaper. This small detail makes your everyday essentials—dishes, glassware, cookbooks—look like a curated display instead of just storage. It’s a designer trick that instantly warms up a kitchen and brings in a dose of personality.

Why this works:

  • Wallpaper creates a backdrop that highlights the items on your shelves, almost like styling a boutique.

  • The contrast of pattern against everyday kitchenware adds visual interest without feeling cluttered.

  • Because the area is relatively small, it’s budget-friendly—you’ll likely only need a partial roll.

Styling tips:

  • Try subtle patterns like grasscloth, ticking stripes, or textured neutrals for an elegant, timeless look.

  • If you want a bolder statement, go with botanical wallpaper, geometric prints, or even a moody dark floral for a touch of drama.

  • Keep your shelves styled with a mix of practical and decorative: white plates, pretty ceramics, and a few natural elements like wood or greenery.

  • For renters or anyone who changes styles often, removable wallpaper is perfect for this project—it’s easy to install and take down when you’re ready for a refresh.

  • Coordinate your wallpaper colors with nearby finishes like your backsplash or cabinet hardware for a cohesive, designer-approved space.

👉 This trick isn’t limited to kitchens—use it in dining rooms with open hutches or bar areas to add the same layered, high-style effect.

04 | Wallpaper the inside of an armoire

I also love when I see bookcases like this lined with pretty paper. . .

Get the look: polka dot wallpaper

Sometimes it’s the hidden details that make the biggest impact. Lining the inside of an armoire with wallpaper turns a simple storage piece into something truly special. In the example here, a playful polka dot wallpaper instantly elevates the armoire, giving it a boutique, one-of-a-kind feel. Every time you open the doors, you’re greeted with a little pop of joy.

Why this works:

  • It transforms a basic furniture piece into something custom and designer-worthy.

  • Wallpaper inside an armoire is unexpected, which makes it feel polished and chic.

  • Because the area is small, you can experiment with bold prints without overwhelming a room.

Styling tips:

  • Pair playful patterns (like polka dots, stripes, or florals) with classic furniture finishes for a fresh contrast.

  • For a timeless look, use grasscloth wallpaper or soft textured neutrals inside painted armoires.

  • Style the interior with pretty storage boxes, folded linens, or styled trays to highlight the wallpaper even more.

  • Use removable wallpaper if you like to switch up your style—it’s easy to update seasonally.

  • Consider coordinating the wallpaper with your room’s palette so the inside feels like a natural extension of the space.

👉 This trick works beautifully in china cabinets, wardrobes, and even media consoles. It’s one of those small details that makes your home look curated and thoughtfully designed.

. . .or check out the frame in the mirror reflection. Framing a unique pattern of wallpaper makes for the most interesting art, no?

05 | Framed chinoiserie wallpaper makes a gorgeous piece of statement art.

Few things feel as elegant and timeless as chinoiserie wallpaper panels. When framed in oversized scale, they instantly become art pieces that bring a sense of luxury and history into your home. Hung as accent art, chinoiserie panels tell a story—whether it’s delicate florals, pagodas, or birds in flight—and create a focal point that feels both traditional and modern.

Why this works:

  • Chinoiserie has been a decorator favorite for centuries, making it a smart investment in timeless style.

  • Oversized panels mimic the effect of hand-painted murals but are much more affordable.

  • Framing wallpaper allows you to highlight the artistry of the print and treat it like fine art.

Styling tips:

  • Hang a pair of chinoiserie panels side by side in a dining room or living room for symmetry and impact.

  • Use gilded or lacquered frames to elevate the look and echo the sophistication of the design.

  • Balance the ornate detail with simple furnishings so the panels take center stage.

  • In bedrooms, chinoiserie panels above a bed can replace a traditional headboard and give the room a boutique-hotel feel.

  • Choose colorways that connect with your palette—soft pastels for a romantic space, deep blues and greens for drama.

👉 This wallpaper trick is perfect for anyone who wants to bring timeless elegance and a high-end designer look into their home without committing to full wall coverage.

06 | Wallpaper a small kitchen to make it feel larger

I am in love with this malachite wallpaper inside this small kitchen.

When space is limited, design has to work harder—and wallpaper is one of the best ways to add instant personality to a small kitchen. In a studio apartment kitchen, wallpapering above the cabinets and even using it as a backsplash alternative can completely transform the space. Instead of looking utilitarian, the kitchen becomes a dramatic design feature that feels layered, cozy, and stylish.

Why this works:

  • Wallpaper draws the eye upward, making small kitchens feel taller and more intentional.

  • Using wallpaper as a backsplash creates visual interest without the expense of tile.

  • In compact spaces like studios, wallpaper turns the kitchen into a design moment instead of an afterthought.

Styling tips:

  • Choose a bold pattern like moody florals, geometric prints, or tropical botanicals to add drama.

  • For a sleek modern look, try black-and-white wallpaper or marble-effect wallpaper for a backsplash vibe.

  • Keep cabinetry simple—white, wood, or neutral tones—so the wallpaper takes center stage.

  • Pair with brass hardware, open shelving, and stylish lighting to create a curated, designer-approved finish.

  • If you rent, opt for removable wallpaper so you can achieve the look without permanent changes.

👉 Pro tip: Carry the wallpaper color or motif into nearby living areas with pillows, art, or accessories so your studio apartment feels cohesive and intentional.

07 | Wallpaper a ceiling in a kids room to create a starry night sky

via decor pad

Children’s rooms are all about imagination, and wallpaper can play a huge role in creating that sense of wonder. One of the most magical tricks is wallpapering the ceiling of a kid’s room with a night sky pattern. Stars, moons, and constellations transform the ceiling into a cozy canopy, making bedtime feel special and comforting. It’s an elevated alternative to glow-in-the-dark stars and brings a designer touch to a child’s sanctuary.

Why this works:

  • The ceiling is often overlooked, but in kids’ spaces it can become the most impactful surface.

  • A night-sky pattern makes the room feel cozy, whimsical, and safe—perfect for winding down at night.

  • Unlike wall treatments, ceiling wallpaper doesn’t compete with furniture or toys, so the room feels styled but not cluttered.

Styling tips:

  • Keep the walls neutral—soft whites, grays, or pale blues—to let the ceiling be the star.

  • Layer in plush textures: cozy rugs, linen bedding, and knit blankets that make the space feel like a little cocoon.

  • Add a starry nightlight or twinkle string lights to play off the celestial wallpaper.

  • Choose peel-and-stick wallpaper if you want flexibility as the child grows and their tastes change.

  • Pair with simple, timeless furniture so the wallpaper feels like a sophisticated design choice rather than a theme.

👉 This trick also works beautifully in nurseries or playrooms—it’s a subtle way to bring magic and creativity into a child’s everyday environment.

08 | Add floral wallpaper to a book case nook

Rocky Mountain decals

Sometimes the smallest spaces make the biggest impact. Adding floral wallpaper inside a bookcase nook instantly gives depth, dimension, and a touch of charm to an otherwise ordinary corner. Whether you’re working with a built-in bookshelf, a recessed reading nook, or even a freestanding cabinet, wallpaper brings that layered, designer look that makes the space feel intentional.

Why this works:

  • Wallpaper adds visual depth, making a recessed nook or shelf feel more like a styled feature than just storage.

  • Florals are timeless and versatile—they can read modern, romantic, or vintage depending on the pattern.

  • Because the area is small, you can experiment with bold prints without overwhelming the entire room.

Styling tips:

  • Choose light, airy florals in pastels for a cottage-inspired reading nook.

  • For drama, go with moody dark floral wallpaper paired with warm wood or black shelving.

  • Style the nook with layered textures—think linen pillows, velvet throws, or woven baskets—to play off the wallpaper’s pattern.

  • Keep accessories simple: stacks of books, a vase of fresh flowers, or a few collected treasures will let the wallpaper shine.

  • If you’re working with a small apartment, add a floor lamp nearby and turn it into a cozy mini library.

👉 This trick is especially effective in home offices or living rooms, where you want a corner to feel layered and personal. It’s proof that even the tiniest design details can bring big style.

09 | Add Wallpaper to Your Staircase for an Eye-Catching Detail

stair wallpaper

Staircases are often overlooked, but they offer the perfect blank canvas for creativity. Adding wallpaper to stair risers is a clever way to bring personality and charm into a space that connects your home’s levels. Whether you go bold with pattern or subtle with texture, this little detail makes a big impact every time you walk by.

Why this works:

  • Stair risers are small but repetitive, so wallpaper creates rhythm and visual interest.

  • It’s budget-friendly—you can transform your staircase with just leftover wallpaper scraps.

  • Because it’s unexpected, wallpaper on stairs feels custom, playful, and designer-approved.

Styling tips:

  • Use geometric or striped wallpaper for a crisp, modern look that elongates the stairs.

  • Go romantic with floral or botanical wallpaper to soften the space.

  • For a classic home, try grasscloth or textured wallpaper in a neutral shade for subtle sophistication.

  • Seal the wallpaper with a protective topcoat (like clear polyurethane) to help it withstand foot traffic.

  • Tie in the wallpaper colors with a runner rug or nearby wall paint for a cohesive feel.

👉 This idea is especially effective in entryways, where first impressions matter. It’s a designer detail that turns a simple staircase into a statement feature.

10 | Wallpaper a small hall closet for a pop of pretty

decor demon

Closets don’t have to be plain. Lining a small hall closet with wallpaper is one of those little luxuries that makes your home feel more thoughtful and polished. Every time you open the door, you’re greeted with a delightful pop of pattern and color—proof that design details don’t have to be reserved for the main rooms.

Why this works:

  • Small, hidden spaces are perfect for experimenting with wallpaper you love but may not want across an entire room.

  • A wallpapered closet transforms a utilitarian space into something special, even if only you see it.

  • Because closets are compact, this is a budget-friendly project—you can often do the whole thing with leftover wallpaper.

Styling tips:

  • Try a cheerful floral wallpaper for a charming surprise that brightens your morning routine.

  • Go bold with graphic or geometric prints for a more modern, unexpected statement.

  • Line the closet with removable wallpaper if you’re renting or love to change up your décor often.

  • Pair with stylish organization—wicker baskets, matching hangers, or fabric bins—to let the wallpaper shine.

  • Consider carrying a subtle element of the wallpaper’s color into the hallway (like a runner rug or framed art) for cohesion.

👉 This trick is especially lovely in linen closets, coat closets, or pantry-style storage. It’s a small effort that brings daily joy and a sense of luxury into the everyday.

11 | Wallpaper a small hall closet for a pop of pretty

DIY Dalia

First impressions matter, and your entryway sets the tone for the entire home. One of the most dramatic tricks designers love is adding wallpaper to the ceiling of a small entryway. By drawing the eye upward, wallpaper creates the illusion of height and makes the space feel larger and more inviting. It’s an elegant surprise that elevates even the tiniest foyers.

Why this works:

  • Wallpaper on the ceiling gives depth and dimension to small spaces, visually expanding them.

  • It transforms an overlooked area into a design moment that feels intentional and stylish.

  • Because the entryway is small, you can use luxurious patterns or textures without overwhelming the space.

Styling tips:

  • Try metallic wallpaper or one with a subtle shimmer to reflect light and brighten the entry.

  • For a timeless look, use grasscloth wallpaper overhead for texture and warmth.

  • Pair patterned wallpaper with a simple chandelier or pendant light that highlights the ceiling detail.

  • Keep walls neutral and let the ceiling be the statement feature.

  • Tie in the wallpaper colors with a runner rug or artwork in the hallway for a cohesive, designed feel.

👉 This trick isn’t just for entryways—you can use ceiling wallpaper in mudrooms, hallways, or even powder rooms to instantly add height and drama.

12 | Add Wallpaper to Closet Door Panels for a Custom Look

via @fablesandpetals

Closet doors are usually flat and forgettable, but with a little wallpaper they can become a stunning design feature. Applying wallpaper to closet door panels gives the look of custom millwork or designer cabinetry without the price tag. It’s an easy way to turn a purely functional element into something stylish and intentional.

Why this works:

  • Closet doors cover a large surface area, so even a subtle wallpaper instantly transforms the room.

  • This trick adds architectural detail and depth, especially in rooms that lack built-in features.

  • It’s renter-friendly—peel-and-stick wallpaper can be applied and removed with no damage.

Styling tips:

  • Use textured wallpapers like grasscloth or linen for a refined, timeless look.

  • For a bold statement, try geometrics, chinoiserie, or floral wallpaper to create a focal point in the bedroom.

  • If your closet has recessed panels, wallpapering just the insets emphasizes the detail and creates a custom, high-end feel.

  • Keep the wallpaper palette tied to your room’s bedding, curtains, or rug for a cohesive design.

  • Add updated hardware (like brass knobs or acrylic pulls) to finish the look and give the doors a boutique vibe.

👉 This idea works beautifully in bedrooms, guest rooms, or even hallway linen closets. It’s proof that wallpaper isn’t just for walls—it can elevate every detail of your home.

13 | Upcycle Furniture with Wallpaper

via @emilymerriettabarker

Wallpaper isn’t just for walls—it can completely transform furniture too. Covering a piece with a bold pattern, like this IKEA upcycle using black-and-white checkerboard wallpaper, instantly turns something basic into a statement piece. It’s a budget-friendly way to get the look of designer furniture while keeping costs low.

Why this works:

  • Wallpaper gives flat-pack or outdated furniture a second life, adding personality and style.

  • A bold print like checkerboard adds graphic impact and feels on-trend, making the piece look custom and curated.

  • It’s an easy DIY project that requires minimal tools and delivers a huge payoff.

Styling tips:

  • Use removable wallpaper if you want flexibility—perfect for testing out bold patterns or swapping looks seasonally.

  • Bold designs (checkerboard, stripes, geometrics) work best on clean-lined furniture like IKEA dressers, nightstands, or cabinets.

  • For a softer look, try floral or grasscloth wallpaper on vintage finds for a cottage-chic vibe.

  • Protect the surface with a clear acrylic topcoat or glass topper to make it more durable.

  • Pair the updated piece with minimal surrounding décor so it stands out as the star of the room.

👉 This idea works beautifully for dresser drawers, side tables, console tables, or even the back of a bar cart. It’s one of the easiest ways to upcycle furniture and give your home a chic, designer-inspired look without spending a fortune.

14 | Transform Your Garage with a Wallpaper Mural

via @ownbyfemme

Who says garages have to feel cold and utilitarian? Adding a large wallpaper mural to your garage walls instantly transforms the space, making it feel more like an extension of your home and less like a storage zone. Think of it as turning your garage into a bonus room—a place that feels inviting, stylish, and completely unique.

I am in love with how Rene Daniela used the Gucci Crane wallpaper in pink to transform her garage.

Why this works:

  • A large-scale mural visually expands the space, making even a basic garage feel intentional and finished.

  • Wallpaper softens the hard edges of concrete and storage, bringing warmth and design.

  • It’s a smart way to turn a multi-use garage (home gym, play space, workshop) into a room you actually enjoy being in.

Styling tips:

  • Go bold with nature-inspired murals like tropical palms, forests, or mountain landscapes to create a sense of escape.

  • For a sleek look, try geometric or abstract murals in black-and-white—perfect for a modern home.

  • Pair the wallpaper with updated flooring (like epoxy or rubber tiles) and stylish storage systems to complete the transformation.

  • Add layered lighting—pendants, sconces, or even string lights—to make the space feel more room-like.

  • If you’re not ready for a full mural, start by wallpapering just one wall as an accent feature.

👉 This trick is perfect for homeowners who want their garage to double as a home gym, creative studio, or lounge space. A wallpaper mural makes the garage feel like part of the home’s design story instead of an afterthought.

Final Thoughts on Using Wallpaper at Home

Wallpaper is no longer just a backdrop—it’s one of the most powerful decorating tools you can use to bring personality, texture, and dimension into your home. From a banana leaf room divider headboard to oversized chinoiserie panels and even a garage mural makeover, these 14 wallpaper tricks prove that pattern can live anywhere, not just on your walls.

What makes wallpaper so special is its ability to transform everyday spaces—closets, stair risers, bookcases, ceilings—into moments of beauty and surprise. It’s the ultimate designer’s secret weapon: versatile, accessible, and endlessly customizable. Whether you’re working with peel-and-stick wallpaper for a renter-friendly project or investing in grasscloth for timeless texture, the right wallpaper choice can elevate your home instantly.

So don’t be afraid to get creative. Test bold prints in small spaces, line your furniture with unexpected patterns, or create oversized art that looks like a custom installation. Wallpaper invites you to tell your story through design—and the best part is, it’s easier than ever to make it your own.

Wallpaper FAQ

1. Can you wallpaper furniture?
Yes! Wallpapering furniture—like dresser drawers, armoires, or IKEA hacks—is one of the easiest ways to upcycle and customize a piece. Just make sure to use a protective topcoat or glass overlay for durability.

2. Is wallpaper renter-friendly?
Absolutely. Removable wallpaper (also called peel-and-stick wallpaper) is designed for renters or anyone who wants a non-permanent option. It applies easily and peels off without damaging walls.

3. What type of wallpaper works best for small spaces?
Bold prints actually work beautifully in small areas like powder rooms, closets, or nooks. Dark florals, geometric patterns, or botanical wallpaper can make the space feel chic and intentional rather than cramped.

4. Can wallpaper make a room look bigger?
Yes—when used strategically. Vertical stripes can elongate walls, while ceiling wallpaper in entryways or small rooms draws the eye upward and creates the illusion of height. Large-scale murals also expand a space visually.

5. How do I choose between traditional wallpaper and peel-and-stick?
Traditional wallpaper often has a more luxurious, seamless look and is ideal for long-term spaces. Peel-and-stick is great for DIY projects, renters, or anyone who wants flexibility to change designs often.

6. What’s the easiest beginner wallpaper project?
Start small: line the back of a bookcase, add wallpaper inside a closet, or frame wallpaper panels as art. These projects require minimal wallpaper but deliver maximum impact.
