Design inspiration for 2016: mixing metallics

I have the honor of being a featured designer every month in the Dallas Morning Newspaper. I've been brainstorming things to discuss in terms of design and decor. What trends I think should go and new ones to come. This next month, I wanted to touch on the subject of metallics. I'm a huge advocate for metallics in the home. I honestly think its like the jewelry of the room. It's been a huge trend to adorn room with a ton of metallic accessories especially with brass and copper really making huge waves in the design world. It's everywhere. 

I love the metallics but I've seen the monochromatic metallic look so much, that I want to encourage you guys to not be afraid to mix metallics in a room. No need to stay with only gold, silver or bronze, etc. Try mixing them up in a balanced way. Notice in the above photo, my old bedroom. I used mostly brass and gold accents but I added in a chair with chrome studs and for me it balanced out the look of too much gold. If they were gold studs it would be overwhelming.

I absolutely love the look of this room with neutral pieces and mixed metallic accessories. I think the rule is to keep a balance of each metallic.

Gift Guide: the many shades of winter white

I'm always dreaming of a white Christmas. Every year around this time, I start to prepare for the New Year. It always makes me think of a fresh slate, especially because my birthday is also at the very beginning of January. So, I like the idea of white all around me. 

This year, I decided to work towards having more balance. I've been on the hunt for the perfect planner (thinking of this nude Filofax because its closest to white) to keep myself more organized. Now, I also want to welcome in some things into my home that will nurture my sanctuary in positive ways. . .all things in the shades of winter white.

I've always wanted a KitchenAide mixer, maybe this year I could bake more if I had this one in snow white. I'm a big fan of having speakers in every room in my home. I like this Beats by Dre speaker box in white. Of course, the Diptyque Baies candle always delights the senses. Every year I like to splurge on a beautifully made bag, how chic is this Chloe crossbody bag in off-white? I love a good marble serving tray with copper handles to organize my perfumes. You always need a good faux fur throw blanket to keep you warm and cozy in the winter.  How fabulous is a Turkish striped bath robe for keeping warm right out of the bath? I love this. I came across this adorable white marbled bracelet with charm to remind you of meditation. If you haven't heard of Bella Notte, I suggest you check out their line. The Hendrix pillow in winter white is definitely on my list. Literally the coziest on the planet.
